Quick Hits:
- A crucial game for both teams, as Bellflower entered on a four-game win streak (6-0 in its last six league games) and Glenn needed to stay atop the league with La Mirada. Glenn looked the better team for six innings, but the Eagles nearly coughed it up with some miscues in the seventh, giving Bellflower two runs to make it 4-3. But Victor Sanchez came to the rescue with a pop fly to secure the win.
- Here is how the wild seventh went: Sanchez gave up a single to leadoff Mike Miranda but the lefty responded with two big strikeouts. Up came Brandon Polizzi and the senior sent a single to right, moving Miranda to third. But before that, Mirada was caught in a pickle, he somehow survived. First one I’ve ever seen not result in an out.
- After Polizzi’s single, a passed ball occurred and Miranda went home. A play was made for Sanchez at the plate but he could hold onto the ball. 4-2. Right after that, Jonah Dean-Hargroves hit a soft chopper to third, the ball was easily handled but the throw was way off, scoring Polizzi and we suddenly had a one-run game with a man at second.
- Glenn huddled after that error and when the huddle broke, Sanchez crouched at the mound and stared down home plate. After the moment he forced a low pop fly to Rosas. Game over.
- Sanchez improved to 8-0 with the complete game win. The lefty registered five Ks and six hits spread out among those seven innings. He cam out on top of Sebastian Sanchez (4-3), Bellflower’s ace, who also wears No. 10.
- The core that did most of the damage for Glenn was Luis Rosas, Jake Carr and Sanchez. And Bellflower added to that as well.
- The Eagles got on the board first thanks to the Buccaneers second miscue, coming on a passed ball in the second inning. The first was an errant throw trying to pick off Rosas stealing second. Rosas was moved over on a sac fly to third and the passed ball allowed him to go home.
- After the passed ball score in the second, the Eagles were consistent, scoring one run for the next three innings. The next one came via a center field single by Carr, scoring Martin Sandoval.
- While Sanchez was dominate on the mound, he also came through on the plate. Sanchez smacked a huge triple up the right foul line. He scored pinch runner Angel Chavez and Glenn went up 3-0.
- Bellflower got on the board in the fifth thanks to senior Brandon Polizzi. The second baseman hit an RBI single to left, scoring Swain Williams. But the Eagles responded in kind with a Rosas’ single to score Carr.
- La Mirada defeated Mayfair 7-5 on Wednesday, keeping La Mirada and Glenn tied atop the standings at 8-1.
