Quick Hits:
- A very entertaining game. Yes, there may have been just one run over seven innings but these two squads put on some great defensive baseball with superb emotion. That defensive battle was led by two great pitchers Victor Sanchez (7-0) and Blake Wilson (2-4), who both went all seven innings.
- The turning point of this game came in the fifth inning. La Mirada was in its best position all day with bases loaded and just a single out against them. That was keyed by a pair of singles from Wilson and Daniel Jung and a walk by RJ Lan. Eric Tapper came up to the plate (he had singled his last at bat) but the senior hit a line drive straight to shortstop Jake Carr. Carr proceeded to kickoff a 6-4-3 double play that had the Glenn dugout going ballistic. Clutch play of the day.
- But Carr was not done after leading the double play. In the top of the sixth, the short stop smashed a left field double to spark the offense. Carlos Garcia drew a walk to get runners at 1st and 2nd, but Glenn capitalized on an attempted pick off throw to Carr that nobody was there to receive, advancing him to third. Faustino Colon then executed a bunt that could not be handled as both Carr and Colon were safe. You can see in the video above.
- It was a shame one pitcher had to take an L today. Wilson committed five strikeouts and gave up just five hits. La Mirada head coach Kim Brooks said Wilson played good enough to win, but no matter how good your pitching is, if you don’t score runs you are not going to win
- While the momentum had clearly shifted to the Eagles after scoring the run, La Mirada was in great position to at the very least send it to extra innings. After a pop out, Jeffrey Murray hit a double off the centerfield wall and was replaced by a pinch runner. Jung then hit a single to shallow right field and beat the throw. But on Jung’s single, Murray’s pinch runner tried to go from second to home. Garcia reacted quickly and threw home to David Correa who tagged the run. Momentum shifted, Sanchez then struck out Lan looking, setting off a bench clearing celebration.
- Jack Brooks, head coach of Glenn, said this win was big for the school, the program and the city. This was the first win for Glenn over La Mirada since 2008.
- Glenn now moves to 13-2 and undefeated in league at 5-0. La Mirada falls to 9-6 and 4-1 in league. Mayfair is the only other undefeated Suburban League team in terms of league record.
- Glenn had a great fan section travel for them. They packed the La Mirada stands. Brooks said he told the kids to tell everyone that they have a very good team this year and to get their whole families out to games. Looks like it worked.
- Glenn will now host La Mirada on Thursday.
